Florida School District to Receive Security Grant from Video Insight

Columbia County School District will receive 48 Video Insight Video Management Software (VMS) licenses, 16 IP video surveillance cameras, one video encoder that includes VMS licenses, 10 years of software upgrades, one year of a customer assurance program, and product training.

The district is located in a rural community in the northeast region of Florida. Judy Tatem, a Columbia County School District teacher, said the county is an economically depressed, educationally disadvantaged community that struggles with poverty, illiteracy and high crime rates that exceed state and national averages.

"We have a plethora of problems from fighting and bullying incidents to school break-ins that are impossible to monitor," said Tatem.

The district consists of three high schools, three middle schools, and nine elementary schools. One of the middle schools has a two-year-old surveillance system in place while the high schools and middle schools have out-of-date systems that are rarely up and running. The elementary schools do not have video surveillance systems installed.

"The current security systems can never be depended upon to provide any verifiable information," said Tatem.

Other recipients of the Security In-Kind Grant are Monroe Public Schools of Michigan, Harrison School District of Colorado, Wood County Schools of West Virginia, Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Pilot Rock School District of Oregon.
