Staples Stores Potentially Attacked by Credit Card Thieves

Staples Stores Potentially Attacked by Credit Card ThievesMultiple Staples stores in the Northeastern United States may have been attacked in another payment-card breach, according to a report. Staples have confirmed it is investigating the potential issue.

Sources form multiple U.S. banks told security reporter Brian Krebs about a pattern of recent credit and debit card fraud that can be traced back to specific Staples store locations. The stores affected are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York City.

“This suggests that the cash registers in at least some Staples locations may have fallen victim to card-stealing malware that lets thieves create counterfeit copies of cards that customers swipe at compromised payment terminals,” said Krebs in his blog.

A Staples representative told Krebs that the company is investigating a “potential issue involving credit card data.” Staples have also notified law enforcement of the possible issue.
