Nest Joins Home Security with Nest Cam

Regarding home security cameras, it looks like the “Nest best thing” has been revealed: the Nest Cam. This home security and monitoring device is not much different than the Dropcam, which was purchased by Nest for $555 million almost a year ago.

Nest Cam sports almost the same specs as Dropcam Pro, recording at 1080p video at 30 frames-per-second with a 130-degree field of vision, but perhaps surprisingly different is the low light rating. Dropcam Pro was rated at 25 feet whereas Nest Cam is only rated at 20 feet and is powered by eight infrared LEDs built into the camera.

The fun part starts with Nest Cam’s three stand options:

  • A zinc alloy stand to make it sturdier and easier to position;
  • A magnet base to adhere to things like refrigerators; or
  • A tripod mount to put it virtually anywhere, making the camera more mobile.

Moving on to the actual video part, users will be able to stream live footage to devices running iOS8 or Android 4.0 and higher, or choose to subscribe to Nest Aware, a service that allows users to save footage for later viewing. Users can save up to 30 days of recordings as well as share/save selected clips of video. The less expensive subscription option offers 10 days of saved recordings. Nest Aware will start at $10 per month.

One of the camera’s features includes Activity Zones to empower the user to highlight specific parts of what the Nest Cam is able to see so that the user gets alerts when activity is detected in these areas. Activity Zone clips will also be highlighted on the user’s smartphone with a redesigned and updated app.

And, of course, Nest Cam integrates with other Nest products. For example, the camera automatically turns on and starts recording if Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector senses smoke or CO2.

The price point is $199.99 and Best Buy is currently taking pre-orders.
