Transparent Big Trucks for Road Safety

The Transparentius concept was thought of in 2009 by Art Lebedev, a Russian design house, as a way to improve road safety and has finally been brought to life in prototype form. The concept is simple. Add a camera to the front of large trucks that tend to move slow on roads – 18-wheelers, trucks and vans used to move people from one place to another, military convoys, etc. – and connect the camera to video displays mounted on the back of the truck. This renders the truck “transparent” for the driver behind, empowering trailing drivers with information about what lies ahead.

Given the name “Safety Truck,” Samsung stitched together a video wall of four of their outdoor video displays and mounted them to the rear of an 18-wheeler truck that transmits captured video via a wireless camera.

Samsung is currently working to get regulatory approval for the deployment of the truck, but the idea may not be practical money-wise. The camera part is cheap and simple to install; however, the four displays would be a major investment for transportation companies and doesn’t exactly lead to a direct financial benefit – just safer driving conditions for all.
