Security Heightened for Bastille Day in France

Bastille Day is in full effect in France, with a spectacular display of fighter jets soaring through blue skies emitting trails of red, white and blue smoke. As people wait anxiously for the yearly Paris parade to begin, for the first time in history, anti-terror forces are marching as an example to extremists abroad and at home that France does not support this type of behavior.

The parade began with a special recognition to three armies of more than 10,000 soldiers who helped France step-up their security measures after the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo. Accolades were given to emergency first-responders and several elite units of the national police force and gendarmerie who specialize in counterterror and hostage kidnappings. French President Francois Hollande also commemorated France’s 70th anniversary of liberation from Nazi Germany by saluting members of Order of Liberation.

According to some media outlets, most spectators felt that the heightened security against possible terrorist threats on such an important holiday was needed and, overall, spectators felt secure and safe.
