Hacker Tells POTUS to Change Twitter Security Settings

Hacker Tells POTUS to Change Twitter Security Settings

A hacker who calls himself WauchulaGhost has tweeted a thread of information showing Twitter users how easy it is to hack into a Twitter account, including the accounts belonging to President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

Since Inauguration Day, WauchulaGhost has been tweeting screenshots of his attempts to break into the accounts. The hacker found that the presidential Twitter accounts were not using the most basic security settings to protect their accounts.

The accounts are more vulnerable because they haven’t selected the security feature that would require you to provide a phone number or email address to reset your password. In the current setting, when you tell Twitter you’ve forgotten your password, the social media platform then gives you information pertaining to the account. This information is just enough to make hacking into the account extremely easy.

On Monday, January 23, WauchulaGhost tweeted that he had figured out the emails linked to the Twitter accounts for @POTUS, @FLOTUS and @DanScavino, President Trump’s head of social media.

WauchulaGhost is the same hacker who breached 500 ISIS accounts on Twitter and replaced the content with adult photos, videos and gay pride messages. He says he has no interest in hacking the president, rather showing him how easily someone else could.

As of Wednesday, January 25, the settings on the accounts had not been changed.
