General Sessions

This year’s general sessions are sure to strike a chord with visitors. On Wednesday, Sept. 29, Lieutenant General (ret) Nadja West will present “Leading Through Uncertainty,” a discussion of executive leadership, crisis management and disaster response during times of crisis and uncertainty. Lt. Gen. West became the U.S. Army’s first African-American woman 3-star General in 2015, and she currently serves as the highest-ranking woman ever to graduate from West Point. West plans to discuss how her experiences like leading more than 130,000 Army healthcare professionals and creating the DOD’s medical response to the Ebola crisis molded her leadership tactics. Facets include strong communication, understanding your team and treating them with respect, and leading with empathy.

On Tuesday, Sept. 28, New York Times bestselling author and award-winning journalist Amanda Ripley will speak on the topic of “Breaking the Spell of High Conflict.” She plans to discuss the distinction between conflict and the escalation of that conflict into “high conflict,” a toxic phenomenon usually characterized by sorting the world into black and white. Ripley will share five strategies for de-escalating high conflict situations based on both her own life experience and extensive research. In addition to ten years working for Time, Ripley has also contributed to The Washington Post, The Atlantic and Slate.

But first, on Monday, Sept. 27, bestselling author Daniel Pink will tell attendees “How to Make Time Your Ally, Not Your Enemy.” Pink’s nonfiction work has covered topics like work, business and behavior; been translated into 41 languages; and sold more than 3 million copies around the world. According to the GSX website, “We think of timing as an art when, in reality, it’s a science—a science that we can leverage to make smarter decisions, enhance our productivity and boost our organizations’ performance. In this entertaining presentation, New York Times bestselling author Daniel Pink will draw on research from dozens of fields in order to bring the science of timing to light.” Pink also served as a speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore.

Booths to Visit: NAPCO Security, OnSolve and Salient

The meat and potatoes of GSX is the exhibit hall, where companies gather to demonstrate the latest products and releases. It’s probably not possible to visit every booth, but three vendors that you should make time for are NAPCO Security, OnSolve and Salient.

Product categories include critical communications, AI-powered risk intelligence, and incident and crisis management. Recent announcements they’ll be highlighting at the show include the OnSolve Control Center, a centralized operating hub that allows organizations to automate and orchestrate responses to common threats in real time, as well as a new brand identity and critical event management platform. And if you need a jolt to start the day, they’ll be providing free caffeine from their booth every morning!

Salient Systems (Booth 1127) offers a wide variety of surveillance equipment solutions. They’ll be providing an in-depth product demo of their open video data platform, Beyond Security. They’re also hosting the Salient’s Customer Cocktail Hour on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 2:30–4:30 p.m.
