Of course the economy raised some concerns about attendance at ISC West this year. I’m not sure where attendance figures stand, but there seems to be lots of security people here in Las Vegas, all serious about new products and technology.

Minutes after a two-story townhouse caught fire on February 5, engines and crews raced to the townhouse to extinguish the fire and search for victims. No one was injured, however, because this was one of many fire experiments performed this winter by researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and other organizations. The tests with real fires and real firefighters are part of a landmark study examining the effect of firefighter crew sizes and equipment arrival times on fire growth rates and an occupant’s ability to survive a building fire.
The National Fire Protection Association has launched the Fire Sprinkler Initiative: Bringing Safety Home. The Fire Sprinkler Initiative will provide materials and resources to people and organizations working to encourage the adoption of requirements for automatic fire sprinklers in new one- and two-family homes.
Ask a group of physical security managers what their most critical security priority is, and not many would answer fire detection and prevention. However, according to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 3,000 lives and more than $10.6 billion dollars in damages were attributed to fires in the United States last year alone. A catastrophic fire can cause loss of life, damage to assets and inventory, and lost productivity due to downtime. In fact, according to KPMG, 40 percent of businesses that suffer a catastrophic disaster, such as a major fire, go out of business in less than two years.
