Spectrum Announces Public Safety Cross Band Communications Platform for First Responder Communication Services

Spectrum Signal Processing by Vecima ("Spectrum"), a provider of software defined radio (SDR) technology, recently announced the availability of its flexComm™ Public Safety Cross Band Communications Platform, an integrated wireless communications subsystem that speeds the time to deployment of first responder communication services. The Cross Band Communications Platform provides complete "RF to Ethernet" connectivity by integrating a cross band RF transceiver with a high performance SDR based signal processing subsystem. The hardware is compact and ruggedizable, and is accompanied by a complete software stack including development tools, enabling public safety providers to develop on target deployment system.

Individual public safety services are allocated specific frequency bands for their respective communication systems, often leading to a disparate communication system. Spectrum's Cross Band Communications Platform uses SDR technology to provide interoperable communications across multiple radio frequencies from 350 to 800 MHz and from 4.940 to 4.990 GHz to allow first responder services to share critical information.

"Spectrum has long enabled interoperability for military communications systems and is proud to facilitate the bridging of critical first responder communications," said Mark Briggs, VP Marketing at Spectrum. "The modular architecture of the Cross Band Communications Platform makes it easy to refresh the technology, allowing replacement of partial components or upgrades to be done by software. In addition, the software reconfigurable architecture of the solution supports advanced communications capabilities such as multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) and cognitive radio that enables efficient use of available frequency spectrum."

The flexComm Public Safety Cross Band Communications Platform consists of a cross band RF transceiver subsystem, a high performance IF and baseband signal processing platform and a complete software operating environment. The RF Transceiver Subsystem is provided from TRL Microwave Technology Inc., a designer and manufacturer of microwave components and systems since 1987. The signal processing platform is based on Spectrum's SDR-3000 family that integrates heterogeneous processing elements (FPGAs, GPPs and DSPs) seamlessly using a high performance embedded communication fabric.

The Cross Band Communications Platform has already begun shipping and is available for order immediately.
