USC Student Death Prompts Security Upgrades

USC Student Death Prompts Security Upgrades Last month near the University of Southern California (USC) campus, a graduate student from China, Xinran Ji, was fatally beaten with a baseball bat around 12:45am. Four people have been charged with this murder.

This act of violence has prompted the university to increase security by:

Upgrading camera systems;
Enhancing public safety training for students,
Having “safety ambassadors” that will work year-round, including summers,
Placing security cameras in off-campus locations, and
Adding more USC security and Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) foot patrols.

According to Elizabeth Garrett, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, safety is a shared responsibility that includes safety practices and methods as well as students, faculty and staff being aware of their surroundings.
