Security was increased for 2015 Zombicon

Even though the number of police officers had increased from previous years, a shooting broke out during the 2015 Zombicon in Fort Meyers, Florida, leaving one dead and others injured. Zombicon spokeswoman Angeli Chin said they did everything they could to put on a safe event.

25 officers in total were working the event, five more than the previous year. The Fort Meyers Police Department said the decision to increase the number of officers working was due to the event’s growth, and not because they suspected something might happen.

Roughly 20,000 people attended the event.

Daniel Costoulas, CEO of Southwest Florida Security, says the event would be safer if it could exist in an enclosed area as opposed to out in the streets of Fort Meyers.

"A location where you can have the rules in place that Zombicon already has in place," Costoulas said. "No realistic weapons, no backpacks, no excessive blood — in a closed environment they can enforce those rules."
