Motorola to Buy Drone Defense Firm for Billions

The acquisition expands the communications giant’s public safety portfolio as federal regulations ease restrictions on counter-unmanned aerial systems.

Motorola Solutions has agreed to acquire counter-drone technology firm D-Fend Solutions for $1.5 billion, a move aimed at expanding its security offerings for government and enterprise clients.

The transaction comes as airspace security becomes a growing priority for public safety agencies worldwide. Recent legislative changes have accelerated the demand for these technologies. The Safer Skies Act, passed as part of the fiscal year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, granted trained state and local law enforcement officers the authority to detect, track and mitigate unauthorized drone threats.

Unlike traditional counter-drone methods that rely on physical destruction or broad signal jamming, the acquired technology focuses on radio frequency cyber-takeovers. The system intercepts the rogue drone's communications link and forces it to land safely, allowing authorized drones to continue operating and preventing collateral damage or local infrastructure shutdowns.

The target company has thousands of active deployments across more than 30 countries. The firm reported an annual revenue growth rate exceeding 50% over the past three years, with projected calendar year 2026 revenues reaching $185 million.

The acquisition is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2026. The deal remains subject to regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions.
