Las Vegas Deploys AI Lighting to Protect Downtown Pedestrians

A new smart crosswalk system in Las Vegas uses targeted LED light beams to track pedestrians and improve driver awareness.

City officials in downtown Las Vegas have launched a pilot program featuring AI-powered crosswalk illumination designed to reduce pedestrian accidents near high-traffic tourist areas.

The technology, known as the SecurOS Soffit from video intelligence company Intelligent Security Systems, was installed at the intersection of First Street and Ogden Avenue. Located one block from the Fremont Street Experience, which sees more than 24 million visitors each year, the intersection was selected to address heightened risks in dense urban corridors.

Unlike traditional overhead streetlights, the system uses video analytics to identify individuals approaching a crosswalk. Once detected, an array of LED lights focuses directly on the pedestrian, tracking their movement across the road to make them more visible to approaching vehicles. When unused, the system maintains standard lighting to mark the crossing area.

The pilot aligns with the city's broader Vision Zero initiative, an international urban planning framework focused on eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries through improved infrastructure design.

Similar systems have previously been deployed in communities in Ohio and Alaska as municipalities seek technological solutions to urban traffic safety challenges.
