FEMA’s United States Fire Administration (USFA) has issued a special report focusing on the causes and characteristics of fires in college and university residential buildings that include dormitories and fraternity and sorority houses.
The week will feature three separate, interrelated events: Securing New Ground, Security 500 and ISC Solutions.
Keeping schools secure is an unarguably important task with inherent challenges. Often, teachers are outnumbered by students, and having enough eyes to make sure all areas are monitored is generally a very daunting task. It is not economically feasible, nor practical, to simply continue hiring additional aides to help watch over various areas of a school campus.

Institutions of higher learning are, by virtue of their mission, open environments. They invite creative thinking and resist interfering, without boundaries, fences or barriers to hinder students’ ability to learn at the highest level. To the security professional responsible for providing a safe and secure environment while maintaining the “open” nature of today’s colleges, it’s not a matter of if something is going to happen, but rather a matter of when.
Colleges are removing analog phones from dormitories for a variety of reasons. Students don’t use them because they have cell phones. In an emergency, equipment failure due to a wall-connected phone’s age can quickly turn into a liability.
