BC Hydro Strengthens Communications During 2010 Winter Olympics With MIR3 Messaging System

MIR3 Inc. recently announced that BC Hydro, the third largest electric utility in Canada, has adopted MIR3’s inEnterprise Intelligent Notification technology to strengthen security communication and ensure important message delivery across the organization during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

As the electric utility responsible for powering this winter’s Games, BC Hydro has worked closely with the Vancouver intelligence community to conduct a full assessment of its electrical infrastructure security -- focusing attention on critical infrastructure and iconic BC Hydro targets such as the dams around the province.

As thousands of spectators flock to the city in the next two weeks, MIR3’s intelligent communication infrastructure will enable BC Hydro to instantly send security updates, threat advisories, and other important messages to its utility officials in seconds via e-mail, phone, or Blackberry PIN-to-PIN. Notifications will also incorporate MIR3’s two-way response technology that can immediately mobilize employees in the event of a crisis -- replacing BC Hydro’s previous security communication involving manual phone tree dialing.

“BC Hydro is obligated to power and protect not just Vancouver residents, but the critical infrastructure around the city regardless of events taking place,” said Doug Powell, manager of corporate security for BC Hydro. “The 2010 Olympic Games present a heightened threat environment. With the help of the Vancouver intelligence community, we’ve taken precautions to ensure power to Olympic venues is not disrupted and that critical assets and structures are safe. MIR3’s inEnterprise is an important tool in this mission in that it allows us to deliver important messages much more effectively to hundreds of people in real time, implementing a wide array of advisories despite events or conditions.”

In addition to internal efforts to heighten security, BC Hydro has also worked alongside local and federal police agencies to build new channels for information sharing during the games. BC Hydro has trained law enforcement on electric grid operation, while federal agencies have trained the critical infrastructure owner-operators on counterterrorism and suspicious activity.

MIR3’s inEnterprise was implemented in one day for BC Hydro administrators, and will be fully operational before the start of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

  • The Evolution of IP Camera Intelligence

As the 30th anniversary of the IP camera approaches in 2026, it is worth reflecting on how far we have come. The first network camera, launched in 1996, delivered one frame every 17 seconds—not impressive by today’s standards, but groundbreaking at the time. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
