Honeywell Customer Highlights the Role of Integrated Security at IACLEA 2013 Annual Conference

Amid a national backdrop of campus-safety concerns, a Honeywell Customer Highlights the Role of Integrated Security at IACLEA 2013 Annual ConferenceHoneywell customer will explain how integrated security can help protect colleges and universities when the largest association of campus law enforcement professionals holds its annual conference later this summer.

Honeywell Customer Highlights the Role of Integrated Security at IACLEA 2013 Annual ConferenceEach year, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, Inc. (IACLEA) gathers to discuss the state of campus safety and solutions to mutual problems. This year’s annual conference is being held June 28 to July 2 in Louisville, which is home to a portion of the Honeywell Security Group that produces technologies used to secure many campuses across the country.

One such campus is the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), which will present a case study entitled, “Using Integrated Security Systems to Accommodate Expansion, Ensure Safety.” The session is one of many that conference attendees can participate in to learn about evolving best practices for securing their campuses.

“We’ve long been a supporter of IACLEA, but there’s no doubt that there’s greater interest and concern surrounding the safety of our campuses than ever before,” said Scott Harkins, president, Honeywell Security Group. “IACLEA advocates, shares and implements the best practices to help improve campus security. This is a critical venue to share information because it directly impacts the well-being of our students and future.”

UDC Police Capt. Ronald Culmer will discuss how his university, with the help of Delaware-based integrator Advantech, used an integrated approach to address safety and security to accommodate campus expansion and a growing student body. With the challenge of providing safety and security for 6,500 to 10,000 people a day at four different locations throughout the D.C. metro area, UDC saw a need to aid its police force by integrating access control, video and intrusion detection systems – systems that historically have operated independently of one another.

“Threats are constantly evolving, so our methods for securing our campuses must evolve as well,” Culmer said. “We’ve found the integrated approach effective because it helps keep the people in charge of maintaining safety more in-the-know about what’s happening across multiple locations. Having that knowledge is critical, and we’re looking forward to sharing that knowledge with our colleagues at IACLEA 2013.”

UDC used Honeywell’s Pro-Watch security management system as its underlying technology infrastructure, which allowed its security systems integrator, Advantech, to more-effectively design the overall integrated system. A new control operations center and Honeywell’s IP-based MAXPRO VMS (video management system) allowed easy and efficient operations while leveraging investment on existing technology. The system allows security personnel to virtually patrol multiple campus locations at once and more-efficiently control access to campus buildings.

“The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators is grateful for the support it has received from Honeywell,” said Susan Koczka, IACLEA director of corporate relations. “Presenting a real-world case study with a member institution that showcases new technologies is exactly what attracts attendees to our conference and expo.”
