Genetec Announces AutoVu Managed Services

Genetec, a provider of unified IP security solutions, today announced AutoVu Managed Services, a new turnkey License Plate Recognition (LPR) solution. Ideally suited for municipal and university parking authorities as well as police departments with LPR-enabled vehicles, AutoVu Managed Services simplifies the deployment and maintenance of mobile LPR systems. Configured to meet the unique requirements of each customer, AutoVu Managed Services eliminates the need to commission and maintain servers or other IT infrastructure and can be deployed and updated without involving an organization's IT staff.

“License plate recognition is a powerful force multiplier for parking and law enforcement users; however, our customers tell us their IT teams are often overtaxed, which slows down the deployment process and makes maintenance and support more complex,” said AutoVu General Manager at Genetec Stephan Kaiser. “By choosing Genetec managed services, customers can focus on their core activities and leverage AutoVu LPR faster, with the benefit of better service and preventive maintenance,” added Kaiser.

Genetec Announces AutoVu Managed ServicesJust like an on premise version of the AutoVu LPR system, AutoVu Managed Services automates license plate reading and identification, making it easier for law enforcement, municipal, and commercial organizations to locate vehicles of interest and enforce parking restrictions. AutoVu Managed Services responds to widespread customer demand for a faster, more cost-efficient alternative to commissioning servers and IT infrastructure when deploying a new mobile LPR system.

Hosted on the highly reliable Microsoft Windows Azure cloud-computing platform, AutoVu Managed Services follows Genetec’s commitment to bring physical security software to the cloud. AutoVu Managed Services customers benefit from the same high-end features and performance as an on-premise system via state-of-the-art encryption and transmission protocols, assuring data is reliably managed and secured at all times.

Experienced Genetec technicians handle system installation and configuration for AutoVu Managed Services as well as the connection with third-party hardware and software, such as permit management systems, pay-by-phone services and pay stations. Once the system is up and running, these technicians monitor performance and can remotely update settings and install upgrades, further reducing the burden on IT staff. This allows customers to focus on their primary tasks of protecting the public or enforcing parking by-laws.

It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
