Smart Smoke Detectors, IP-Based Systems Displayed At NFPA

An impressive array of fire detectors, sensors, protective apparel, gas monitors, and a variety of other fire protection products were on display on the NFPA Expo show floor. A wide range of companies were on hand to show their latest and greatest offerings. Here are some of the show highlights:

System Sensor, a global manufacturer of fire detection and notification products, showcased its new FAAST Fire Alarm Aspiration Sensing Technology product, which uses an aspirator fan to sample air in the environment through a pipe network. The technology is geared to detect the faintest traces of smoke, so it will provide detection 30-60 minutes before a fire spreads. System Sensor representatives demonstrated the product by lighting a small box-enclosed wire on fire. About 10 seconds later, before any hint of smoke was seen, the FAAST system detected a change in the air near the wire. The product is set to hit the market in July.

The focus of many companies was the expansion of IP-based mass notification systems. Gamewell-FCI by Honeywell displayed the functions of its new emergency notification systems with a line of wireless and hardwired audible notification solutions for industrial, educational, and outdoor applications. The company emphasized how IP technology can increase safety over large areas, because it provides quick communication over a radio frequency, IP-Ethernet, mesh radio, or satellite. Apollo, a fire detection company based in England, was also on hand to explain the benefits of IP fire systems. The company’s smoke and heat detectors have the ability to communicate wirelessly over large areas using an interface unit.

In addition to gadgets, protective apparel and personal protective equipment was a major highlight at the expo, with companies like Scott Health & Safety, Magid Glove & Safety, GSL, and Auburn Manufacturing exhibiting. A highlight was Ashburn Hill Corp.’s display of its TECGEN SELECT protective garments with Insect Shield. The UL- and NFPA-certified apparel is designed to keep the body at a cooler temperature and repel insects. The Insect Shield repellent is EPA-registered and lasts through 70 industrial washings.
